
HEALTH & SAFETY (FIRST AID) REGULATIONS 1981Two Day Certificated Course (HSE Approved)
The Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 state that re-qualification training should cover the topics of the full FAW course in sufficient detail to ensure delegates are competent on completion.
Topics covered on the course include the following:

Responsibilities of a First Aider - dealing with hazards, safety of casualty

Resuscitation - Practical CPR- dealing with choking, asthma, etc

Treatment and control of bleeding - dealing with different wounds
-
Recognition and treatment of shock
- Management of the unconscious casualty - including head injuries,

epilepsy etc
-
Contents of First Aid boxes and their uses
-
Recognition of illness
-
Treatment of injuries to bones, muscles and joints
-
Treatment of minor injuries
-
Treatment of burns and scalds
-
Eye irrigation
-
Poisons
-
Simple record-keeping
-
Personal hygiene in treating wounds

Communication and delegation in an emergency
The Health & Safety Executive specify that this course should be of at least two full days’ duration to include the examination and must be taken before the First Aid at Work Certificate expires. After the expiry date the full three day course must be taken again.
The course content will be continually updated as new techniques are introduced; these will be discussed and practised on the course. Revision of all subjects above will be included but delegates will also be expected to undertake private study as time is limited.The delegates will be assessed on both their theoretical and practical knowledge. The successful delegates will be awarded a certificate that is valid for three years.
The Health & Safety Executive strongly recommends that all delegates carry out a three hour update session annually to maintain skill levels with the two day re-qualification course being taken again after three years.
